Transplacental infection of the fetus with rubella usually in the first trimester of pregnancy, as a consequence of maternal infection, resulting in various developmental abnormalities in the newborn infant. they include cardiac and ocular lesions, deafness, microcephaly, mental retardation, and generalized growth retardation.
